Older adults living in rural Northeastern Minnesota face health care challenges from a lack of access to resources, shortage of medical staff and isolation in small towns, industry representatives told Sen. Al Franken on Saturday during a listening session in Duluth.
Those challenges — and possible solutions — were laid out at the meeting with Franken, D Minn., co-chairman of the bipartisan Senate Rural Health Caucus, at the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission.
Concerns expressed during the session included health care jobs going unfilled because skilled workers don’t want to move to rural Minnesota; inability to pay competitive wages to entice people to the health care industry; the need for broadband Internet in rural areas to communicate and use electronic health records; and the inability for some residents to receive services because of their distance from medical facilities....more

ARDC Regional Planning Request for Proposal (9.15.2014)
The Arrowhead Regional Development Commission has released an RFP seeking qualified firms or individuals to develop a retail and services trade area and market study for Koochiching County and the City of International Falls, Minnesota.
The goal of the project is to provide information to businesses, governments, and citizens of the county and city to help them understand the current market position and develop strategies to capitalize and improve on those conditions. The successful firm will need to incorporate an assessment of the neighboring City of Fort Frances, Ontario and the Rainy River District or Northwest Ontario. A detailed scope of work and information on the project are contained in the attached request for proposals.

(Duluth, Minnesota)The Arrowhead Regional Development Commission (ARDC) is seeking proposals from qualified professional consultants to assist with the development of an Economic Adjustment Strategy and Action Plan for Koochiching County and the City of International Falls, Minnesota.
The scope of work focuses on six objectives to help ARDC and its community partners develop a long term economic development strategy by identifying competitive strengths and weakness of the City and County and developing recommendations to grow a diversified and more resilient economy and workforce. A detailed scope of work and information on the project are contained in the request for proposals, which is linked to below.
Proposals must be received not later than 4:30 PM (CST) on September 26, 2014 at firstname.lastname@example.org or at the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission at 221 West First Street, Duluth, MN 55802. Proposals arriving after this time will not be accepted.

|DTA Groundbreaking Ceremony Scheduled for Thursday, June 19th |

DULUTH, MINNESOTA (June 16, 2014) – The Duluth Transit Authority (DTA) will host a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Multimodal Transportation Center this Thursday, June 19, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. The event will take place in the lower parking lot behind the construction site. The construction site is located on Michigan Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenue West.
Construction of the DTA’s new $28 million-dollar Multimodal Transportation Center will begin immediately following the groundbreaking ceremony. DTA officials and Executives from the General Contractor, Mortenson Construction, and the Architectural Firm, LHB, will be on hand to answer questions about the project. It will take approximately 18 months to complete with a ribbon-cutting ceremony planned for December of 2015. Read More

|Volunteers Needed as Matter of Balance Coaches for Seniors|

(Duluth, MN) The Arrowhead Area Agency on Aging is seeking volunteers willing to become trained coaches in the Matter of Balance program. Coaches will teach eight two-hour sessions covering such topics as exercise and fall prevention, managing concerns about falling, and how to recognize fall hazards at home and in the community. Coaches will address safe habits and attitudes towards the fear of falling, promote exercise to increase strength and balance, and give encouragement to seniors in the community.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Commerce Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) today announced a $200,000 grant to the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission to help establish an economic recovery strategy in response to recent job losses resulting from the restructuring of the paper industry in Koochiching County, Minnesota.
“Helping U.S. regions develop strategies that will facilitate their efforts to design and implement long-term plans for economic recovery is an important first step to getting their economies back on track,” said U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Matt Erskine. “The EDA grant announced today will allow for the creation of a long-term strategy to help Northern Minnesota realize greater economic growth and stability.” Read more

Leaders will facilitate groups of people with chronic conditions. The objective of the program is to help participants build confidence in self-health management and maintain an active lifestyle.
After partaking in the program, one person wrote, “Living Well gave me a framework to take control of my life again. The action plans help me break things into manageable ‘bites’. ” Another participant said, “What I feel….is a normal part of having a chronic condition. I don’t feel so alone anymore.” Read more

|Rest Stop to be Built at Beaver River|

Construction will begin this summer on a rest stop next to the Beaver River in Beaver Bay. Currently, the building site is undeveloped and used as a parking lot for tourists, hikers and anglers. It’s also a well-known stop for photographers interested in capturing nearby Beaver River Falls.
According to Arrowhead Regional Development Commission Senior Project Leader Bonnie Hundrieser, the completed project will be a premier destination for travelers and should promote greater economic activity for the area, since tourists will have a place to stop and explore local businesses.
“There will be a total of six interpretive panels at the site that will educate people about the history of the area,” Hundrieser said. Kiosks will educate people about the historic use of the Beaver River, identify Beaver Bay as the first settlement along the North Shore and provide information about the local scenic byways. Senator Schmit states, “I'd like to hear about the experiences (good and bad) local communities have had with broadband service. I'd like to know what kind of vision communities have for broadband and how they view its potential impact on economic growth and quality of life. I'd also like to talk about specific applications folks may have in mind (tele-health, e-commerce, education, etc.), as well as any challenges encountered in getting access to affordable and reliable broadband service.”
